A Weekly Legislative Update From CUNA

The House and Senate This Week (03/18/2013)

The House and the Senate return to Washington this week for one last week before the Spring District Work Period.  When the House and the Senate complete their business for the week, they will next convene during the week of April 8.

Floor Schedule

The Senate will convene at 2 p.m. today to resume consideration of H.R. 933, the continuing appropriations bill passed by the House.  The continuing appropriations bill would fund the government until the end of the fiscal year.

The House will meet at 12:00 p.m. today to consider legislation under suspension of the rules.  For the remainder of the week, the House will consider the House budget resolution for fiscal year 2014.  In addition, the House may consider a possible Senate substitute amendment to H.R. 933..

Committee Meetings

We are following several hearings on both sides of the Capitol this week:

Tuesday

The House Judiciary Committee Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations Subcommittee will hold a hearing on "ECPA (Electronic Communications Privacy Act) Part 1: Lawful Access to Stored Content."

The House Ways and Means Committee will hold a full committee hearing on "Tax Reform and Tax Provisions Affecting State and Local Governments."

The House Financial Services Committee will hold a committee hearing on "Sustainable Housing Finance: An Update from the Federal Housing Finance Agency on the GSE (government-sponsored enterprise) Conservatorships."

The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee will vote on the nominations of Richard Cordray, to be director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; and Mary Jo White, to be a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee will hold a full committee hearing on "Bipartisan Solutions for Housing Finance Reform?"

The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee Securities, Insurance, and Investment Subcommittee will hold a hearing on "Streamlining Regulation, Improving Consumer Protection and Increasing Competition in Insurance Markets."

Wednesday

The House Financial Services Committee Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee will hold a hearing on "State of Community Banking: Is the Current Regulatory Environment Adversely Affecting Community Financial Institutions?"  The purpose of this hearing is, in part, to fulfill a statutory obligation to consider reports from the FDIC Office of Inspector General and the Government Accountability Office on the causes and effects of the 414 bank failures that occurred during the financial crisis.  Witnesses include representatives from the FDIC and the GAO.

The House Ways and Means Committee Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee will hold a hearing on the financial products tax reform discussion draft that was released on January 24, 2013.
